$2.9 Million for Man Abused by a Carmelite Brother

Reported September 2024:

Cook County, IL: Lane Brown, LLC attorneys Mark A. Brown and Kellie J. Snyder obtained a $2,900,000 settlement on behalf of our client.

A man, now 55, alleged that he was sexually abused as a teenager by a Carmelite brother while he was a student at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago. He recovered repressed memories of the abuse in the mid-2010s.

The claim alleged that the Carmelites were negligent in failing to keep the brother away from minors despite knowledge of other allegations against him involving inappropriate sexual contact with minors. The defendants denied that they were negligent. The Carmelites and Mount Carmel High School paid the settlement, and the claim was resolved without a lawsuit being filed.

Settlement: $2,900,000
