Metra Train Hits and Kills a Brother and Sister

A Lawndale family received the devastating news on Thursday evening, August 7, 2014. Two siblings, a 57-year-old brother and his 54-year-old sister, were reportedly out on the elevated train tracks near West 21st Street and South Homan Avenue when they were hit and killed by a Metra train at approximately 4:50 p.m.
Family members and close friends said that the siblings were extremely close. The pair was likely looking for scrap metal in the area, as they had for the past several decades, when the inbound Metra train that was running express to Union Station hit them.
Why Wasn’t This Accident Prevented?
This fatal Chicago train accident is still under investigation. However, some of the things that may be considered include:
- How fast the train was traveling at the time of the accident.
- Whether the place where the accident occurred is a known neighborhood shortcut across South Homan Avenue. It has been reported that there are well worn pedestrian paths along this stretch of track.
- Whether the fence around the tracks was broken or missing.
The family believes that the brother may not have seen the train coming and that his devoted sister may have jumped in to try to save him.
