Approximately two dozen people were injured in a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus accident on Monday, April 28, 2014. The CTA said that the northbound Number 49 bus and an SUV crashed head on just before 10:00 a.m., on Western Avenue, near the intersection with 50th Street on the city’s Southwest Side.

Two-Dozen Injuries Reported

Early accident reports indicate that the driver of the SUV was seriously injured and taken to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County. Two children riding in the back of the SUV were also injured, but less seriously than the driver.

The CTA bus driver and 20 passengers on the Number 49 bus were also injured in the crash. Nine of the 21 victims on the bus refused transport to area hospitals—they were treated at the scene of the crash. The remaining 12 victims were taken to area hospitals—most were listed in good to fair condition.

The Chicago Police Department, the Chicago Fire Department, and at least eight ambulances responded to this Gage Park accident scene. While some witnesses reported seeing the SUV cross the center line, the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
