Driver Tries to Pass CTA Bus and Causes Serious Accident

A recent accident in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood on Chicago’s north side resulted in serious injuries and one fatality. The crash, which involved five vehicles and two pedestrians, occurred on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at approximately 11:15 a.m., near the intersection of Sheridan Road and West Balmoral Avenue.

What Happened?

According to news reports, a driver in a red Ford sedan, who was speeding down Sheridan Road, ran a red light, passing several other cars that were stopped there. He then attempted to pass a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus—the northbound No. 147—on the right. The driver’s actions caused him to hit two pedestrians who were loading groceries into their trunk and to slam into several parked cars that were along the side of the road.

The following injuries were reported after the accident:

  • The driver of the red Ford sedan was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. He was listed in critical condition.
  • The red car struck an elderly man, who had just picked up groceries from the Care for Real food pantry and was putting them in his trunk. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
  • Four other people were treated and released from Weiss Memorial Hospital and Swedish Covenant Hospital.

 

Police say that the driver of the car is facing criminal charges for his role in the accident.
