Why Teen Driving Safety Is Important Right Now

Serious teen car accidents occur on Illinois roads during every season of the year. A deadly teen accident on the Chicago Skyway in November is no less tragic than a deadly teen accident on Butterfield Road in Wheaton in May.

Yet, There Are Important Reasons to Talk about Teen-Driving Safety Now

As the weather warms up and the end of the school year approaches, teen-driving safety becomes even more important to discuss because:

  • There are many new drivers on the road. Now that the snow and ice is gone, many teens are getting their driver’s licenses. In addition, those who already have a license may be allowed to drive more frequently.
  • Big events such as proms and graduations are coming up quickly. As a result, teens may on the roads late at night—tired, distracted, and possibly even drunk.
  • Teens may have more freedom to drive in the summer. For example, many Chicago area teens enjoy going to Lollapalooza in Grant Park, North Avenue Beach, or simply to hanging out at a friend’s house when school is not in session.

We are not the only ones who think this is an important time to think about teen-driving safety. May is Global Youth Traffic Month, and there is a national push to try to prevent teen crashes.
